Institute Responds to the Agriculture (Wales) White Paper

The Agriculture (Wales) White Paper set out the Welsh Government’s plans for rural policy and support now that we have left the European Union. The White Paper noted the barriers to woodland creation and management and outlined proposals to address these. It also made proposals for regulatory reform, including changes to allow Ministers to add conditions to felling licenses, and to allow felling licenses to be amended, suspended or revoked after they have been granted.

Our key points include:

  • Integrating forestry and UKFS properly and giving equivalence with farming
  • Recognising the skills and capacity needed
  • Importance of good advice provision to maximise uptake and minimise risk.

 

The proposed changes to felling licences divided opinion amongst our diverse membership. We urged proper consultation on the reasons for and detail of any changes.
