Institute Fellow awarded Honorary Doctor of Science

In December 2023, Trefor Owen FICFor was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree (DSci) from Bangor University for his contribution to Public Service.

Trefor is a senior Welsh forestry professional and experienced public sector leader in sustainable forestry and land management. Before retiring in 2022, he was responsible for the care of Scotland’s 650,000 hectares of national forests and land as Director of Land Management & Regions at Forestry and Land Scotland and formerly Head of Land Management and Interim Chief Executive at Forestry Commission Scotland.

An alumni of Bangor University, Trefor is passionate about education, the student experience, and employability, and has always maintained close ties to the university and is a member of Bangor’s Accelerator Advisory Board that supports science and technology start-ups in North Wales, to drive the growth of innovative businesses in the region.

Trefor is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Forester and has been a member of the Institute’s Professional and Educational Standards Committee since 2021. He is a Trustee of the Scottish Forestry Trust.
