Job description

Due to our increasing activities and expanding work programme in North Scotland, Scottish Woodlands is seeking to engage with enthusiastic professionals with a passion for management and harvesting, who can offer a fresh and visionary way of thinking, for key and critical positions within the organisation.

Based out of our Fort William office, North Region, we have exciting opportunities for a Forest Manager/Senior Forest Manager and Harvesting Manager, to join our progressive team to service both our existing client base and expanding business. As key members of a high-performing team, operating in a competitive, commercial environment, candidates will be working closely with other managers, demonstrating excellent communication and organisational skills, together with the ability to identify, analyse and solve technical problems.

Forestry and harvesting experience plus relevant qualifications are desired, relevant training may be provided to the right candidate. These positions may also suit someone with an environmental, geography, agricultural or rural surveying background who wishes to enter the forestry sector. We are looking for people with professional acumen who are commercially aware and have a sound understanding of the rural sector. Excellent communication and organisational skills are required, together with the ability to identify, analyse and solve problems. Candidates will possess proficient IT skills, have experience in working with contractors, project management skills and health & safety experience are all highly desirable, as well as the ability to undertake aspects of the roles and responsibilities of a Forestry Works Manager.

Applicants must hold a full, valid driving licence which is essential for the role. Professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters or progressing towards attaining chartered status or another similar professional qualification is preferred but not essential. New recruits would be encouraged and supported to achieve these additional qualifications where they are appropriate to the role.

Job Role

The role offers an excellent balance of practical outdoor work with office-based duties and will involve:

  • Surveying and strategic planning of new and established woodlands
  • Restructuring and management from planning through to harvesting
  • Compliance with Health & Safety regulations and other legislation relevant to forestry operations
  • Preparation of forest plans and grant applications and other related permissions
  • Identifying and developing new woodland creation projects from concept design through to establishment
  • Use of GIS mapping systems
  • Preparing and managing budgets
  • Producing client reports, liaising with client and contractors and attending client meetings.
