Numerous part-time self-employed roles available in the East of England & East Midlands region and the Yorkshire & Northeast region on a fixed-term basis (to end of March 2025) working remotely. Hours will vary depending upon Project stage, the surveyor’s location and availability, but as a guide between 2-8 days per month. Rate £25/hr and relevant expenses.
NCFed is recruiting numerous woodland surveyors for an exciting extension of our coppice mapping project supported by the Forestry Commission’s Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Fund. The Project aims to improve the understanding of where coppice woodland is located and its condition, as well as to prioritise and promote the active management of coppice woodlands for a wide range of environmental and socio-economic benefits, including coppice products. Initially established in the South West, further funding totalling around £198,000 was recently secured that covers both the East of England & East Midlands region and the Yorkshire & Northeast region, with the majority of the funding allocated to the East of England & East Midlands region.
Working alongside other technical specialists, the role of woodland surveyors will be working independently to visit identified areas of woodland and collate information about them, submitting info into a specially designed app. Surveyors will need to demonstrate a passion for woodlands and their stewardship, and a demonstrable knowledge of coppicing and coppice woodlands. Particular technical expertise such as use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), woodland assessment and management, practical experience and applied knowledge of coppicing, as well as landowner engagement are highly desirable.
We are looking for candidates able to start training in early January 2023 onwards for a core period of 6-9 months until October 2024, although some discrete pieces of work may be required beyond this. Within each regional survey team one position of lead surveyor will be appointed, who will receive further instruction relating to the projects’ technical and data management components.
Surveys will be conducted in the Yorkshire and North East region – including the regions of Yorkshire, Durham, and Northumberland – and the East Midlands and East of England region – including the counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland, and Leicester. Applicants must be predominantly located in the region they are applying for.
To apply, send your CV and a one page covering letter by email to the Project Governance Officer at: joshua.lawson@ncfed.org.uk. Please note in your covering letter which region and county you reside in and your availability for interviews.
Closing date for applications: 17:00 on Sunday 10 December 2023
Shortlisted applicants will be notified by: Wednesday 13 December 2023
Interviews: Held online (daytime) on Mon 18 and Tue 17 December 2023
