The National Pinetum is home to a world-leading collection of conifers and contains over 12,000 specimen trees. The trees and landscape create a beautiful setting for peaceful walks and picnics in the rolling hills and valleys of the High Weald Area National Landscape. Bedgebury National Pinetum is awe-inspiring for tree lovers looking to learn about tree species of international conservation importance and see them up close.
Session One: Take a loop walk round the old Pinetum
- History of Bedgebury and the conifer collection
- The range of conifer Genera and Species that will grow at Bedgebury
- Science behind the collection
- Managing a busy visitor attraction with large trees everywhere
- Landscaping with conifers – ‘conifers are not just for Christmas!’
Session Two: Walk through the more recent plantings to the Forest Plots and return
- How do we use Bedgebury in our search for Forestry species
- Look at some of the future potential productive species
- Have a bit of an ID session – what is a conifer?
- Visit the remains of the old ‘Forest Garden’ – research plots that can still tell us a story
- Pick up a few broadleaves while we are at it.
