Call for Forestry & Woodland Advisory Committee members

There are a number of vacancies to fill on the Forestry Commission’s Forestry and Woodlands Advisory Committees (FWACs) and we strongly encourage Chartered members in England to demonstrate their expert knowledge and express their interest.

The FWACs helps shape the way the Forestry Commission leads the expansion, protection, improvement and connection of people to the trees, woodlands and forests in each region of England and the delivery of these benefits with their partners.  FWACs also have a role in advising on ‘disputed cases’ in respect to new woodland creation and Felling Licence applications.  The Committees consist of an independent Chair and up to 11 volunteer members who bring a range of interests to the Committee.

There is a FWAC in:

  • North West England
  • North East England
  • Yorkshire & the Humber
  • West Midlands
  • East Midlands
  • East England
  • South West England
  • South East England
  • London

Committees normally meet three times a year, plus occasional joint meetings and ad hoc meetings depending on local demands. Members should be in a position to be able to volunteer up to 5 days per year. These roles will be for an initial three-year term up until 30 November 2024, after which they could be considered for renewal for a further three-year term of office.

The nomination process requires the completion of an expression of interest form by either the nominating organisation or the applicant themselves. This should be returned with the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae by 20 September 2021 at the latest. If the expression of interest is returned by the nominating organisation, they should confirm that the candidate has agreed to be nominated. If the form is returned by the candidate, then they should provide confirmation that their application is supported by a nominating organisation if applicable.

This is not a role where you would be representing the Institute but we are always eager to get the voices of our expert professional members heard to influence policy and practice for the better. We would also welcome hearing from members who already sit on the FWACs to help us stay in touch with regional issues.
