Tom joined Forest Research in February 2009, from Bangor University. He currently holds the title of Deputy Programme Manager in the Forest Mensuration, Modelling and Forecasting group, which has responsibilities for the research and development of forest measurement systems, the maintenance of measurement standards and the development and implementation of models of forest growth and yield, biomass and cabon.

Tom is an ICF Fellow, having held membership of the Institute since 1991. He has been a member of the Examinations Board since 2010, and has recently been awarded the ICF President’s Award in recognition of his excellent work in this capacity.

Tom will assume his new role at Forest Research on 21 April 2014, replacing Professor Hugh Evans upon his retirement. Speaking of his appointment, Tom said:

“I am delighted to be able to take forward the work Forest Research carries out to support the ongoing work of Natural Resources Wales and of the Land, Nature, Forestry and Marine Division of the Welsh Government in addressing Welsh research priorities and the forestry agenda. I also look forward to strengthening existing links, and exploring new collaborative opportunities with Universities and Research Institutes across Wales.

“The continued presence and development of the Forestry Commission’s Forest Research unit in Aberystwyth has the potential to bring considerable cross-border benefits to forestry research activities throughout Wales.”
