New UKWAS standard for urban trees in development

A standard for the certification of ‘Trees outside Forests, particularly those in an urban environment, is being developed by PEFC UK with the support of a small working group. It will act as an appendix to the already endorsed national sustainable forest management scheme, the UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS).

The UKWAS has been adapted, with the grateful consent of the UKWAS Steering Group, to meet the requirements of the appendix in the PEFC International SFM standard (PEFC ST 1003: 2018) which covers ‘Trees outside Forests’. A second and final consultation has been launched and we strongly encourage members to respond. PEFC UK hopes that once established, the standard will become an independently certified benchmark for ‘Trees Outside Forests’ in the UK.
