Mitchell Awarded Prestigious Silviculture Prize
Dr Stephen J Mitchell PhD RPF, Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, has been awarded the 2013 Percy Stubbs, John Bolton King and Edward Garfitt Prize for Silviculture (The Silvicultural Prize).
Dr Stephen Mitchell is to receive this prestigious award in recognition of his paper entitled Wind as a natural disturbance agent in forests: a synthesis, published in Forestry (2013) 86 (2): 147-157 – ICF’s respected international journal of forestry research, produced by Oxford University Press. The paper was considered to be an outstanding review of our knowledge of the subject, and proved highly popular with readers of the academic journal.
On hearing the news, Dr Mitchell said:
“It is a great honour to receive this award from the Institute of Chartered Foresters. The journal Forestry has published some of the most important experimental work on this topic over the years. Windthrow is a challenging process to study, and to manage.
“I hope that my review paper will provide managers with additional insights, and promote further collaboration among researchers.”
Over 700 Copies Downloaded

Dr Mitchell is a member of the Canadian Institute of Forestry and the Association of BC Forest Professionals, as well as a Chair of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations. He adds his award-winning paper to his many published works, which focus on areas of silviculture systems, windthrow assessment and management, natural disturbance processes, riparian zone management and regeneration.
The Silvicultural Prize will be presented to Dr Mitchell during the forthcoming Trees, People and the Built Environment II conference, which takes place on 2-3 April at the University of Birmingham. He will join 400 built and natural environment sector professionals at this major urban trees research event.
