RE:LEAF Tree and Woodland Awards
On 27 May, ICF joined a host of tree professionals at the London RE:LEAF Tree and Woodland Awards. The awards celebrate the work of individuals, community groups and professionals that improve and expand the city’s woodland cover, and encourage the management of its urban forests.
Special congratulations to ICF members Jim Smith MICFor, Forestry Commission England, who was awarded The London Tree Officers Association Individual Commitment Award, and Andy Tipping MICFor, who joined the event for the London Borough of Barnet, who picked up the Street Tree 2008-2015 Award for the A5 Edgware Road Tree Planting Project.

Street Tree Award 2015 winner: Queensbridge Neighbours Tree Project
A project initiated by local residents to improve their neighbourhood through planting of 50 trees.
Street Tree 2008-2015 Award was given to 2 winners:
London Borough of Barnet – A5 Edgware Road tree planting project.
The A5 Edgware Road tree planting project in Barnet involved the planting of 89 Dawn redwoods trees along a very busy road, having a transformative impact on the local environment and expected economic regeneration benefits.
Trees for Cities for their Mayor of London Street Tree Programme 2008-15.
Trees for Cities have planted 2000 street trees since 2008 across 12 London Boroughs in deprived areas and on some challenging sites. Central to their work is engagement and involvement of communities in the planting and maintenance of the trees.
The Community Tree Award: Broomfield Community Orchard
For transforming an unused bowling green into a thriving orchard used for community activities such as music events and skills training.
The Community Woodland Award: The Hillingdon Group of London Wildlife Trust
For their work to protect and enhance local woodlands for the benefit of wildlife and improved public access.
Highly commended nominees were Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park and the Friends of Barnes Common.
The Trees and Development Award: The Angel Building, Islington (Derwent London, J & L Gibbons, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris & London Borough of Islington)
For the retention and careful management of 37 mature trees and the exemplary planting of a further 37 semi mature trees.
The awards panel highly commended the Leicester Square City Quarter development ( Barrell Tree Consultancy, Westminster City Council and Burns & Nice).
The Acorn Award: Eugene Clerkin
For his tireless work with the Tree Musketeers and as a Tree Warden caring for young trees around Hackney and promoting tree maintenance to others.
The Trees and Technology Award: Jonathan Robinson for his development of the Open Source Canopy Cover Audit application
For developing this innovative software in his own time. It is very simple and effective for users, to help understand the amount of canopy cover over a chosen area.
The Tree Council Trees and Learning Award: Dormers Wells High School
For tree planting as part of an outdoor educational programme for 8-10 year old children that for some has resulted in a horticultural career.
The London Tree Officers Association Individual Commitment Award: Jim Smith
The LTOA Executive Committee awarded Jim for the years of hard work promoting Trees in London and for championing the important works that tree officers undertake.
