Job description

We have created a new post within our Forestry Section which will focus on developing community engagement and take the lead on all Ward member tree enquiries.

The Community Tree Officer will respond to and assess Ward Member and MP enquiries relating to the maintenance of Council owned trees and other related issues, in order to recommend appropriate outcomes within specified timescales.

In tandem, the post holder will set up and coordinate a voluntary, Ward based Tree Warden Scheme, providing training and support for volunteers nominated by Community Committees. This will include some evening and weekend working for which time can be taken off in lieu.

The Community Tree Officer will hold a HNC / Foundation Degree in Aboriculture / Forestry or have equivalent working experience.

The job will involve daily telephone contact with members of the public, Members, other sections within P&C, other Council Departments and outside agencies, which will require effective written and oral communication skills.

The successful applicant will also have experience and knowledge of tree risk management and assessing tree condition, plus experience of tree planting and establishment management.

The successful candidate will be expected to have knowledge of using a digital tree asset management system, knowledge of conservation area and tree preservation order legalisation, plus experience of working with and leading volunteers in appropriate practical tree care/woodland management activities.

As a full member of the Forestry team, you will be expected to take part in the Forestry standby/call rota which provides a 24/7 response to out of hours tree emergencies.
