Institute announces new Chair of the Examinations Board

The Institute of Chartered Foresters is delighted to announce that Alex Murray MICFor, Forestry Manager at Glennon Brothers (UK), will assume the role of Chair of the Examinations Board, taking over the position from Steve McCartney FICFor who has stepped down after serving with distinction for seven years.

The Chair of the Examinations Board acts on behalf of the Institute’s Council to ensure that all of the Institute’s examination processes are fair, robust, and transparent. Given the need for experience and continuity in this important position, the role does not abide by the Institute’s usual two-year governance rule and post-holders are expected to serve a minimum of four years. Following Alex’s promotion to the role of Chair, Helen Kirk MICFor of FPCR Environment & Design has been appointed as the new Vice-Chair of the Examinations Board.

New Chair of the Examinations Board, Alex Murray FICFor, commented:

“I’m really pleased to take on the role of Chair of the Examinations Board. My focus is to continue the excellent work of my predecessor by ensuring the Professional Membership Entry (PME) and Assessed Professional Competence (APC) processes are robustly managed with high standards applied fairly and consistently.

“The Examinations Board is made up of passionate individuals who freely give their time – maintaining a membership that is well balanced and truly representative of the wider sector is very important. It would be wrong not to highlight the hard work and dedication of the assessors and Moderators, without whom the Examinations Board simply could not function. Their commitment, enthusiasm, and professionalism underpins all that we do.”

Steve McCartney FICFor, outgoing Chair of the Examinations Board, said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as Chair of the Examinations Board for the past seven years. My only regret has been that I no longer could sit across the table from an applicant and enjoy experiencing the passion and commitment that so many demonstrate in their pursuit of excellence.

In further changes to the Examinations Board, Tom Jenkins FICFor will be stepping down from his role as Examinations Moderator following sixteen years of distinguished service in the role. Nick Mottram FICFor CEnv will continue as a Moderator this year, and will be joined in his duties by three new Moderators: Angus Mackie FICFor, Alan Motion MBE FICFor CEnv and Dr Victoria Stokes MICFor.
