Forestry graduate research bursary opens for applications

We are pleased to support this opportunity, thanks to James Jones and Sons Ltd and the Scottish Forestry Trust,  for young forestry graduates in the UK to travel to Australia to share best practice between the two sectors.

Recent BSc and MSc graduates of forestry are invited to apply for this annual bursary that will involve a research project of choice based on Australian forestry and timber processing (e.g. genetics, silvicultural practice, grading and timber specifications, regulations and building specifications, timber engineering and supply chain, timber architecture and building design and logistics) that aims to develop world leading practice, and connect the industry in the UK and Australia.

Please apply before the deadline of 24 February 2023. The successful graduate will be announced in late April 2023.

Additional information

  • Successful graduates would be based at one of the Hyne/ XLam locations in Australia for a minimum of 12 weeks and a maximum of 26 weeks
  • All travel to and within Australia and accommodation will be arranged and paid directly by James Jones
  • A stipend of £340 per week will be paid to cover meals, incidental travel, insurance and other living costs while in Australia
  • The recipient will be required to produce a research report and prepare one or more articles about their findings and should be prepared to present these online to Institute members
  • A further £500 will be paid on completion of the dissemination activity
  • The successful graduate will be awarded one year’s free Associate membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters.
